Summary

WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers fo BATMAN / SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #30!Wonder Woman’smost iconic costume has made an epic comeback in a team-up withBatmanandSuperman, and the nostalgia is hitting me HARD. While I’m all in on Diana’s current look in Tom King’s ongoing run, there’s something about this classic costume that just feels right. Lucky for me, this design is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

Mark Waid and Gleb Melnikov’sBatman/Superman: World’s Finest#30transforms the dynamic duo of Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne into a triumphant trio as Wonder Woman officially joins their ranks.

Like the rest of the series, this issue focuses on the early days of Superman, Batman, and Robin (Dick Grayson), making Diana’s addition to the team particularly exciting as it marks the Trinity’s first mission together. Alongside the thrill of this iconic team-up,fans are treated to a nostalgic return of the Amazon Princess in her George Pérez costume design—one of her best looks ever, in my opinion.

Wonder Woman’s George Pérez Costume Returns inBatman / Superman: World’s Finest#30

George Pérez 1980s Variant FromWonder Woman#750 (2020)

Pérez’s 1987 costume design is particularly notable as it followed DC’s game-changingCrisis on Infinite Earthsseries. The artist made significant updates, like swapping Diana’s high heels for flats—highlighting the impracticality of an isolated Amazon culture using heels—and giving her Bracelets of Submission a bolder design. However, this iconic costume isn’t solely Pérez’s creation. The foundation of the look, including thechange from Diana’s classic golden eagle emblem to the WW initials on her chest, was introduced in 1982under the leadership of DC Comics' first female publisher, Jenette Kahn.

Hence,Wonder Woman’s classic costume, featuring her signature WW emblem, star-spangled briefs, white-striped red boots, and bold bracelets, was the result of a collaborative effort among DC creators. Seeing this costume return inBatman / Superman: World’s Finest#30 was a nostalgic delight for me, as it faithfully recreates the original design. The only thing missing was Diana’s curlier, fuller hair that Pérez popularized in his version. While I understand that hairstyle was very much a product of the ’80s, I still would have loved to see it make a comeback.

With future solicitations for Waid’sWorld’s Finestteasing the formation of the Justice League, it’s safe to say I’ll be seeing plenty more of the Pérez version of Wonder Woman’s costume. One of my favorite aspects of seeing older designs return in modern comics is witnessing how contemporary art standards influence these classic looks. Brian Bolland’s cover forWonder Woman#72 (1993) remains one of my favorite recreations of Diana’s 1987 costume. Similarly,World’s Finestartist Melnikov has done an admirable job bringing this iconic design to life, and I look forward to seeing more of his take onWonder Womanin the upcoming issues.

Created on the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman is a super-powered demi-goddess with extreme physical strength who utilizes magical gifts (like her famous Lasso of Truth) to defeat her foes. As mighty as her fellow heroes Superman and the Justice League, Wonder Woman is unmatched in her compassion and virtue.
