Summary
Solar Oppositesseason 5 just featured a hilarious parody of a trope seen in projects like the MCU, and while it is funny, it also acts as a twist that will change the waySolar Oppositesis seen forever. DespiteSolar Oppositesbeing a sci-fi sitcom, the show has a surprising amount of lore and continuity, with this remaining consistent throughout the show’s five seasons. However, this one detail from a season 5 episode completely flips theSolar Oppositesuniverse upside down, forever altering the way that the TV show’s world operates.
Solar Oppositesseason 5 picks up right whereSolar Oppositesseason 4 ended, with it continuing the previous season’s cliffhanger by opening with the Opposites living on another planet. Eventually they return home to Earth, continuing their mission to terraform it into the next Shlorpian paradise. However, the Opposites gang eventually begins questioning the start of their mission, leading to them making a massive discovery by using one of their sci-fi devices in season 5, episode 8, “The What If?! Device.”

All 5 Seasons Of Solar Opposites Take Place Inside Of The “What If?” Machine
None Of The Show Is True To Reality
Solar Oppositesseason 5, episode 8 introduces a “What If?” machine,a sci-fi tool that allows the Opposites to live through non-canon hypothetical episodesthat answer questions about what alternate realities could look like. This is incredibly similar to the animated MCU showWhat If…?, which features alternate universe stories with slight changes to the mainline MCU.Solar Oppositeseven admits that they are ripping offFuturama’s “Anthology of Interest I” episode, which also uses the same gimmick of a What-If Machine.
After some debate, the gang eventually decides to use the “What If?” machine. Upon getting the device, however, the Opposites realize that the button has already been pressed, highlighting the terrifying reality that they are currently living in a What If? scenario. Nobody knows who pressed the button or what the What If? scenario is, and since unpressing the button means that they would destroy this reality, nobody can decide if they want to reset the device.

Eventually, Korvo manages to make a device that shows them what happened before the “What If?” machine was activated. As it turns out, upon the Opposites initially leaving Planet Shlorp, they had another crew member who served as the team leader. After an argument, the leader pressed the “What If?” machine’s button, asking what would happen if he wasn’t there and if Korvo was the team leader. This means that all five seasons ofSolar Oppositeshave taken place within this hypothetical, with the trueSolar Oppositesreality still remaining unseen.

What Happens In Solar Opposites True Reality
There Was Another Opposite
While looking into the true nature of their universe,Korvo manages to find out more about the realSolar Oppositesreality, using the “What If?” machine to ask what would happen if the button hadn’t been pressed. As it turns out, the Shlorpian who pressed the button would have remained team leader, with Korvo remaining as a thankless janitor and servant who is the least-valued member of the team. The Opposites would have continued to Earth, with none of the events of anySolar Oppositesepisode happening.
Instead, the Opposites would have remained focused on their mission, allowing The Pupa to quickly evolve. This leads to the Opposites successfully terraforming Earth, wiping out human civilization and successfully creating the next Shlorpian paradise. This implies that Korvo’s leadership of theSolar Oppositescastis what is preventing them from successfully completing their mission. Despite this, however, the Opposites choose not to unpress the button, instead deciding to continue living within the “What If?” scenario.
